On "Capturing Light" An Artist's Perspective

Capturing light to reveal form is the essence of photography. Capturing light is also one of the most important components of successful paintings and sculptures, for without light, they would be flat and meaningless. Only a master photographer can begin to understand the full impact of light on a subject, and it's narrative power to characterize.

The concept of light and dark has influenced artists long before the days of classical Greek sculpture.
"Sculpture, a very noble art, is one that does not in the execution require the same supreme ingenuity as the art of painting, since in two most important and difficult particulars, in foreshortening and in light and shade... the painter has to invent a process, [whereas] sculpture is helped by nature." (Leonardo da Vinci)
